13 Reasons Why - Episode 1
Joshua Isaac
The pilot of 13 Reasons why marks the first chapter or ‘tape’
of the hugely popular and trending television series. Given the critical acclaim
and positive reception the show has received, you might find my mixed reviews a
bit surprising.
Moving on to the review. Episode one starts of fairly well, with the typical mystery behind the show being set up through Clay Jensen finding a box filled with tapes. I won’t spoil much of the show and won’t include too much of the plot for those who have already seen the series so here are things I liked and didn’t like.
The injury that Clay Jensen received was a clever plot device to mark the past and present. I found this clever. I also liked the way the show presented Hannah Baker with a saturated colour scheme to emphasis in a positive light. What I didn’t like however was the typical teenage angst and cliché social structure of American high schools. BORING. The way that the touchy issue of suicide has been explored will be a topic I will be very interested to review in the future.
