13 Reasons Why - Episode 4
Episode 4 sees 13 Reasons Why begin to branch out into common themes in the life of a modern teenager. The use of social media to impact young lives and the power it has over peoples perception of others comes to light in chapter 4, where Hannah and her ex-friend Courtney are the victims of a stalker who took revealing photos of them while they were, surprise, trying to catch the stalker - the scumbag taking photos of them is later revealed as Tyler (crazy right).
However well intentioned the writers were when they crafted this episode, several flaws and misgivings come to mind about the way the issue of stalking was addressed. I'm talking more about plot holes that make it hard to suspend my disbelief. Firstly, Hannah clearly knows she is being stalked - she hears shutter sounds and is clearly paranoid about someone watching her, AND YET she insists on keeping her curtains wide open on a well populated residential street while she changes?? Secondly, you're telling me that a few sips of some crappy alcohol from Hannah's parents wine cabinet is enough to make the pair forget about the god damn stalker that might literally be pointing a lens at them at any given moment? And finally, Tyler the one who took the photo of Hannah and Courtney THROUGH THEIR BEDROOM WINDOW and then spread it around the school sure is happy to leave his own bedroom window wide open for Clay to take a photo of his bare ass. Do the writers not have a sense of irony??
Anyway I gave this episode a 6/10.
