13 Reasons Why - Episode 7
At this
point, it’s extremely hard not to see Hannah Baker as anything but a self-absorbed
teenager lacking in self-awareness. Maybe episode 7 is different? WRONG
The subject
of tape 4 is Zach Dempsey. Dempsey is another of the high schools elite clique –
the jocks. While it is easy to throw Zach in with the rest of the brattish and
mean jocks that we have witnessed so far, I believe Zach is a much different
character. Not complex, but different.
You're telling me this harmless soul is supposed to be the bad guy? |
Anyway,
Hannah once again goes on a tirade about how Zach has somehow contributed to
the ’13 reasons’ why she decided to end her own life. Her side of the story
goes like this: In one of her classes, students write positive and anonymous
letters and put them in a box with the recipient students name on it – like a
secret santa but with nice notes. Hannah
claims Zach keeps stealing the positive notes people leave for her, therefore
she is going to kill herself.
I know it’s
hard to believe, but that’s the primary reason that she gives regarding why he
is on the tapes. Despite the fact he was a genuinely nice guy with a few issues
about rejection, and despite the fact she was the one who acted irrationally when
he tried to ask her out, we as the audience are meant to think poor Zach is the
villain. As for Dempsey, I think there is not a single reason why he should be
on the tapes and put the through all of Hannah’s BS.
This episode
gets a 5/10 for its extremely twisted version of events that Hannah puts
forward. Who knows maybe I’m wrong and there is more to Zach’s story that has
been shown so far.
