13 Reasons Why - Episode 13

Episode 13 marks the long awaited end of 13 Reasons Why. Seeing as the episode featured some graphic and controversial scenes, it can be said that the season finale was definitely confronting. Chapter 13 sees Clay hand in the box of tapes to the final person on the list - Mr Porter, the school councillor. It is here that a series of flashbacks highlights the interaction Hannah Backer had with Mr Porter when she came to talk about her sexual assault. In the tape Hannah takes a very accusatory stance against Mr Porter saying that he did not do enough to stop her from killing herself.

I think that such a notion is complete rubbish. Hannah kept playing cat and mouse with the councillor in some twisted form of misguided vengeance. Mr Porter, in my opinion, did what he could given the information Hannah provided. He could not work miracles, nor could he do more to help he unless she was willing to come forward. He was passionate and empathetic, and Hannah in her tapes paints him as a villain? What a joke.

All in all, I think that the season finale works to carry on the underlying theme of teenage angst and confusion, and that sometimes, teenagers don’t make sense.

This episode gets a 8.5/10
